

Thousands of captives from raids on Spanish, Mexican, and American settlers assimilated into Comanche society. They took captives from other tribes during warfare, using them as slaves, selling them to the Spanish and (later) Mexican settlers, or adopting them into their tribe. They traded with neighboring Native American peoples, and Spanish, French, and American colonists and settlers.Īs European Americans encroached on their territory, the Comanche waged war on and raided their settlements, as well as those of neighboring Native American tribes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Comanche lived in most of present-day northwestern Texas and adjacent areas in eastern New Mexico, southeastern Colorado, southwestern Kansas, western Oklahoma, and northern Chihuahua. The Comanche were once part of the Shoshone people of the Great Basin. Originally, it was a Shoshoni dialect, but diverged and became a separate language. The Comanche language is a Numic language of the Uto-Aztecan family. Comanche people today belong to the federally recognized Comanche Nation, headquartered in Lawton, Oklahoma. Burial will follow the service at Fairlawn Cemetery in Comanche, Oklahoma.Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, Novemat the Comanche Funeral Home with the family receiving visitors from 6:00 PM ro 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Corum Baptist Church with Bruce Humphries officiating. James is survived by: his wife Jearldine three sons - Jimmy "Rocky" Graham, Steve Graham and wife Linda, Robbie Graham and wife Terri a brother - David Montgomery and wife Anita grandchildren - Scott, Jake, Chase, Eric, James, Jessica, and John nineteen great-grandchildren and niece and nephew - Mindy and Brodie. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and one daughter-in-law Linda Lee Graham. James was a member of the Corum Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing with his family and looking for good deals at cattle sales. He worked for Halliburton in Duncan, Oklahoma, for 30 years until he retired to ranching. James married Jearldine Humphries June 2, 1956, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He was raised by his grandparents Dick and Margaret Montgomery in Comanche.

He was born August 19, 1936, in Duncan, Oklahoma, to Karl and Mickey (Root) Graham. James Robert Graham James Robert Graham, 83, of Comanche, Oklahoma, passed from this life November 21, 2019.
